How to survive the silly season.

When the shops are 'beginning to look a lot like Christmas', the holiday season starts to kick in. But being cold outside with dreary grey skies, you sometimes wonder how you will survive 'the most wonderful time of the year'.

Maybe it's not a bad thing to reset yourself. Get rid of the clutter and find some happiness in simplicity.
When you want nothing then crawl onto the couch with a blanket, maybe it's better to rearrange your thoughts and clear out your head. Be kind to yourself and go out for a nice walk. Visite a friend and bring some joy into your world. Maybe take a break from social media and find some peace of mind, everything will still be there when you plug in again.

By the time the holiday season begins, you will be refreshed and ready for all the sillyness it brings.

And if you still can't enjoy this time of year, maybe Miss Poppy's Christmas song will change your mind.

Wishing everyone happy holidays!

Something about retro hairdo's.

There are different kinds of retro hairstyles and here you have a summary of 8 different styles.

  1. Old hollywood waves, the signature hairstyle of Veronica Lake. This is a very classy and simple hairstyle that goes great with an eveningdress.

  2.  1940s Gibson roll: This hairstyle is perfect for a black-tie wedding or to show off a pretty neckline–and it’s great for girls with curly hair.

  3. 1950s Headscarf: Real popular now in the rockabilly scene and an easy updo for a bad hairday.

  4. 1950s Bumper bangs: This hairstyle was made famous by Bettie Page — the famous pin-up model and actress of the 1950s.

  5. 1940s Victory rolls: A bit tricky to do but with practice you wil get the hang of it.

  6. 1950s French twist: never gone out of style, but it has to be done well. This is a great tutorial for it from Kate- http://www.thesmallthingsblog.com

  7. 1960s Hair flip: super popular in the sixties and the favorite of Emma Peel (The avengers)

  8. 1960s Big bouffant:  The beehive is the definition of '60s hair,

6 tips on how to become a role model.

It's a nice feeling to be significant. Everyone likes to be important to others. So how do we achieve that?  These are some of the traits you need:

  1. Demonstrate confidence and selfrespect.
Don't forget, you are the most important person in your world. that doesn't mean that you should be arrogant. No, but you should treat yourself with love and respect, only then you can treat others accordenly.
  2. Be unique, not perfect.
Just embrace the exclusive being that you are. Noone asks for perfection, on the contrary. Perfect people make others feel like a failure. You need to bring out the best in others and they will love you for that.
  3. Listening to others is as important as talking to them.By listening you make them feel important to you. Let them talk first and at the end, if you make a remark or give them your opinion. It will be heard.
  4. Show respect and concern for others.Even if you're a very succesful business women, you should not feel better then others or take them for granted. Everyone has their value.
  5. Always have an open mind and be willing to learn new things.
Maybe you have done your whole life things a certain way. Still, taking on the task a little differently might give you a better result.
  6. Don't be affraid to admit a mistake. This is very important( and one I don't easy do, sadly), admitting making mistakes makes you human. People can connect to that feeling.

10 winterpieces that can't be missed in your retro wardrobe

In wintertime it's always a challenge knowing what to wear.
Here are a few tips from Miss Poppy:

  1. An animal print coat( fake fur). Animal prints are perfect to give you that warm fuzzy feeling in wintertime. Just don't overdo it. One garment with animal print is enough.
  2. The cardigan, this is a great basic piece to put on or off acording to the temperature. They are ideal for when your college wants to open a window, while it's almost freezing outside.
  3. The duffelcoat, this coat was made for the Britisch expedition to the Artic. So that sais it all, it's made for winter.
  4. A dressing gown, yes this is for indoors. In the evening you want to feel warm and luxurious. A dressing gown is ideal for that. We sell a stunning one at Misspoppywear
  5. A camelcoat, nothing screems more style and elegance then a camelcoat. Marilyn Monroe wore one, Jackie Kennedy, and Audrey hepburn all were fan of this simple garment.
  6. Tartan, winter and tartan go hand in hand. If a tartan dress is to much for you, then start of with a tartan skirt. We sell some great tartan items in the shop.
  7. Fair Isle sweater, you know, with the nice pattern with multiple colours. This is a great sweater to wear, even on Holidays.
  8. A beret, if you have them in different colours you can pretty much wear them with any outfit.
  9. A turtleneck, not anyone is a fan of this jumper, but Audrey Hepburn was a hudge lover. Make sure you wear him, if your certain not to get to warm, otherwise a cardigan is a better choice.
  10. Tights, what a lifesaver they are, and they come in many colours and prints.Just make sure that they are in impeccable condition.

Hope I helped you a bit with this list.
Stay warm!

Something about age, good taste and good posture.

As far as fashion is concerned, there are 2 ages girlhood and womanhood. You can dress according your age but that doesn't mean that you have to dress like an old woman. Women of all ages have their good qualities and it's important to accentuate these qualities. This said, nothing is more sad then a woman who dresses like a young girl. Good taste is knowing that at a certain age a cropped top is not flattering anymore (unless you are exceptionally well preserved, but that is only for the lucky few.) Is there a key to good dressing? No there's not, simplicity, grooming and good taste cannot be bought. But you can learn them by looking at other elegant women. Look and learn, that is the key. But be careful, you can have good taste and know how to dress elegant but all of that is in vein if you don't have a good posture. Many years ago girls were taught how to walk. A lot of us today can use some training in how to walk with dignity and lightness. I must say, some people have a natural gift for grace. But no worries, if it doesn't come naturally, you can cultivate it.

Like any talent, you have to practice to develop it.

Another great tip to upscale your outfit!

This is another great tip that I had from a college blogger (forgot her name sadly) But this also works great and is so simple you wouldn't think about it. Here it is:

Wear a scarf around your neck

Yes it's very simple and again like my other tip it works.
This can be worn as a tie (photo 1)
Or as airhostesses do (photo 2)

Just try it, simple and efficient.

One great tip to upscale you outfit.

This is one easy tip that will instantly make your outfit more posh. I got this from another blogger (don't know who anymore) and it works. It sounds a bit simple but you should give it a try.

Wear pointed shoes

Yes, that's it. I did the test as you can see on the photo's below.
I don't excactly now why, maybe because pointed shoes make your leg look longer and thus more elegant.

Now we don't sell shoes at Misspoppywear, but we do sell the pretty skirt I'm wearing.

The desperate housewife

Every working woman with children is a desperate housewife on a regular basis.

Especially vacations are stressy periods for women. For a week of enjoyment and relaxing, they have to pay dearly and have to do twice as much work back home. Because the laundry and other work have multiplied in the meantime. Bye bye the relaxed state and welcome the stress, and voilà, your week's holiday is over and forgotten. How do you solve this? Maybe you can still do the laundry but leave the ironing to the ironing shop. Catch up with the rest of the work by not cooking that week and going to the takeaway or caterer. And above all, delegate, yes the magic word, the rest of the family has also been on holidays so they can also pitch in. We women, however, are very poor at delegating, because what we do, we always do better ... It remains a dilemma: the division of tasks, but if you want to do too much, sooner or later you will be presented with the bill in the form of burn out or  exhaustion.

So delegate girls and make choices in whatever job you can leave to someone else.

In the meanwhile, you can use the extra free time for shopping

Where does my love for retro chic clothing come from.

Many people ask me how I came in to retro clothing, but few people ask why I sell these clothes. I started to think about that, because everyone can sell clothes ... So what makes Misspoppywear so special?

Our motto is:

'The strongest action for a woman is to love herself,

Many years ago I struggled with confidence I felt like people were looking down on me. And because I strongly believe that every woman can, and especially has the right to shine, I ended up in retro.

Because retro clothing respects the woman, every woman. These beautiful garments simply get out the best of you, retro respects the feminine curves and even applauds them (not like with regular clothing where we are always reminded how full our buttocks is) And that's why I love these clothes. But also the entire retro atmosphere, the ritual to harmonizing your hairstyle and clothing in the morning ... With respect and love, underlining the woman in yourself. Simply love yourself as you are.

This evolution is also underway in men and I can only applaud this. We see a huge boom at barbers and more and more men think about their look.

I am sure that retro can play a major role in this evolution. Retro clothing underlines style, class and elegance and is numb to trends.

Stay classy and a little bit sassy.

5 simple tips to look elegant.

Elegance is Miss Poppy's trademark and she has some simple tips on how to look elegant.
Some of these tips are mentioned before in an other post. But they remain applicable.

  1. Check your posture. Shoulders back and chin up. Try to look confident. Practice this untill it becomes a habit. If you're not sure how it feels to stand straight, the trick with the book on the head is a good way to see if you're walking tall.
  2. When at dinner, mind your table manners, keep your mouth closed while eating, chew slowly and use your napkin. No smartphones, i-pad or other distractions at the table.
  3. Pay attention to details. Nails, make up, shoes, handbag...
  4. Dress elegant, a classic chique style is always a good choice. Here you can find how you can start a vintage chic wardrobe.
  5. Take care of your hairdo, although a messy out of bed look, can look great. It's not very elegant and noone will take you seriously. Better choose for a nice bun or a more clean hairdo.

And if you're looking for vintage chic clothes, hop on by the webshop.

Ten tips to look ten years younger.

Everyone wants to look youthful, and not everyone wants to take drastic measures for it. So here are 10 tips you can apply to look younger.

    1. Get a good haircut, if possible with some layers to soften your face. If you colour your hair, then try to stay away from dark colours as they might age you. Balayages are also a very good idea.
    2. Replace your black eyeliner with brown and go for natural soft makeup and smokey eyes. Swap your red lipstick for soft pink and gloss. Red lipstick can harden your features.
    3. Exfoliate 2 times a week to get those rosy pink cheeks. You can apply a soft pink blush but don't overdo it.
    4. Dress in a classic chic manner, these clothes are ageless. Here you find ten tips to start a vintage chic wardrobe. Leave the short skirts and naked belly for the young girls.
    5. Add muscle, when you age you start to loose muscle and your body becomes slack. You need to add muscle to create and shape your body.
    6. Take care of your hands and feet with some moisterizer. Do this for your whole body if you have dry skin, certainly after a shower.
    7. Get enough sleep, yes I know it's been said before but it's true.
    8. Smile, yes, you can get laughlines but a smile lifts the face naturally.
    9. Be grateful for your life every day. If you have a roof over your head and enough to eat then you have everything to be grateful for. Nothing ages you more then a worried face.
    10. Think about your posture, stand straight, shoulders back. Only old people are walking with an arched back, so stand straight.

So stay youthful and glamorous. If you need some clothes to match your younger look.

Heatwave style: how to look elegant in tropical temperatures

During a heatwave you can still look elegant and sophisticated.
Here are a few tips:

  1. Cotton, linen, silk and viscose are the fabrics of choice
  2. Embrace tropical prints
  3. Long wide skirts are a very good choice
  4. As is a airy kimono dress
  5. stay away from everything that is too tight.
  6. Jeans can be very warm so choose light cotton pants, again not too tight.
  7. For shoes: comfy flats or a nice sandal work great. Keep the flipflops for the holidays.
  8. Don't reveal to much skin, it's not classy
  9. Loose cotton, or cotton-linen mix, t-shirts are a summer savior.
  10. Prints are a fantastic ally at concealing sweat patches so embrace geometrics and florals.

Dress to impress part 2: Less is more

As you probably know. To much of a good thing can be overdoing it and create an opposite effect. Especially with make up, this is good advice. This is a mistake many women make. You shouldn't see your make up. If you have a beauty mark, use it as a distinguished feature. Freckles? Don't cover them up.
Also, make the difference in your day & night  make up. If you use full night make up all day, there's no room to spice things up for a special occasion. Despite our attempt to attract men with fals eyelashes and pouty red lips, it can all be a bit to much for them. We want them to see us as the classy, stylish galls we are, so don't spoil that with glitter and gloss.
We live in a world were the motto rules: Don't like it? Fix it. But we should learn to work with what we have and highlight our good features. And yes, it's not always easy, espececially in this perfect fake world. But we always have something we like about yourselves and there's a way to bring it out even more.

“Beneath the makeup and behind the smile I am just a girl who wishes for the world.”

1940's pin up girl hair tutorial.

1940's hair is very easy and practical to wear on a daily basis. Usually the hair is finished with a bandana and gets a spicy rockabilly look.

At pinterest I found a super fun tutorial that is fairly easy. The advantage is that you can start straight hair, so you do not have to make an effort the day before to turn pincurls and sleep with them.

Why I started Misspoppywear!

Many people ask me how I came into retro clothing, but few people ask why I sell these clothes. And I started to think about that, because everyone can sell clothes ... So what makes Misspoppywear so special?

Now, our motto is:

Tips to travel solo

When travelling solo you are more likely to run in to yourself, and that can be a frightning experience. So here are a few tips to survive a solotrip.

  1. Be organized and prepair your trip. Allow yourself some luxury like a taxi from the airport to your hotel.
  2. Keep it simple the first days and explore the surroundings, let yourself adapt to a slower pace.
  3. If you are like me a bit of an anxious person you need to take this step by step. Remember, you’re on holidays so you don’t have to do anything. It could be that after a few days you get tired or have a bad day. Accept it and just go with it. Take a long siesta or have a nice cry. Sometimes is just everyday stress catching up with you.
  4. Take some books with you to cover the lonely moments. And maybe you can book something like taking a golfcourse... Enjoy the nature and the culture.
  5. Try to connect other people. Booking in an all adult hotel could help you with that. Travelling alone is never easy but it's a brave thing to do and you will certainly learn something from it, if not to appreciate your home and family more.
  6. Not everyone is made for travelling, so if the first time you found out it wasn't your thing, so be it.

Just keep in mind that you are the most important person on this travel so don't feel obligated to see the 'popular spots'. And enjoy.

Review of the Eri trouser by GracyQ

These stylish pants are a perfect outfit for a relaxing day out. The 3/4 pants are nice and wide on the hips and so super comfortable. The flat front is very flattering on the belly. Combine him a beautiful tops for an elegant, casual fifties look.
I'm not a big fan of 3/4 trouser, at least not the wide models. I think they can make you look plump.
I was happy to discover that it wasn't the case for these ones. The fabric is very soft and looks a bit like waffled cotton and is super pleasant to wear. But still, you have to be tall to pull of this look. So I would not advice shorter women to buy these trousers. And why so expencive you say? Well, Gracy Q is made in Europe and the fabrics also.

'Gracy Q is European with conviction. Since its launch, Leipzig has remained the creative home and headquarters of the label. The exclusive fabrics used for the collections originate from Europe, and the production is solely carried out here. For fashion-designer and tailor Anne Kämpfe, sustainability and precision are of the highest priority during the creation process. Her designs incorporate both classic and modern elements. In this way, Gracy Q strongly emphasises the style of sophisticated women.'

So these are 'clean clothes'!

First steps to become a confident woman.

Confidence is something you can build step by step. And remember, confidence is not the same as beauty. When a confident woman enters the room, she leaves a mark.
The first and most important step to developing style is to project this kind of confidence. This can only be received if you respect yourself, love yourself and dress up only for yourself. And that is the tricky part because being women, we are especially good at critisizing ourselves and others. So you have to become your own muse.
Many of those stylish women are no great beauties, but they draw from a great amount of self-confidence. They define themselves and become ‘imperfect icons’. Moreover, when a woman imbraces her imperfections they can become her greatest strenght. Confidence has nothing to do with aesthetics but everything to do with attitude. And that is something that takes practice, which is a good thing because that means that it’s attainable for anyone. And if in the beginning you fail, fake it. Confidence is the one thing that you can fake untill you believe it. You are the goddess, so start treating yourself accordingly. And remember, what you wear matters. A great outfit will make you much more spotlight worthy. Bear in mind, women with amazing personal style are powerful.

One you've got confidence, the rest is gravy

Why is Misspoppywear not so cheap?

A while ago we decided to avoid, as much as possible, to sell clothing that is made in low wage countries. Part out of principle but also because it's a good thing to invest in European firms. As a result of that, we became somewhat more expensive, yes that is inevitable. We strongly believe that there has to be a change in mentality, because you must realize that: 'Cheap does not mean that it didn't cost much, but that someone else pays the price for you. If you are not paying enough, it's the people who are making it or the earth that has been plundered for it.' So we try to buy more of Emmy Design( made in portugal) Miss Candyfloss (made in Romania) Diva Catwalk (made in UK) The house of Foxy ( made in UK) Marmelade ( made in EU) Gracy Q (made in EU) Mll Tambour ( made in EU) ...
However, you will save money and time by opting for quality. You choose something beautiful and durable that will last for years and so it doesn't need to be replaced. Just think about how much time it takes to buy new things, which might not be really comfortable to wear, so you have to send it back or throw it away. And that is a shame.

To say it with a quote by Vivienne Westwood:  "My message is, 'Buy less, choose well, make it last,'"

So we would appreciate it if you would take a look at these 'clean' brands on our webshop.

Choose well,
Miss Poppy

Tips for a vintage hairdo!

A vintage hairstyle is sometimes a challenge. To get it nice, you usually need those nice curls. You can get these with a medium curling iron, or if you really want to keep it vintage, with the famous 'pincurls'. These are curls that you turn around your fingers and fix on the scalp with a bobbypin and then leave to dry. These have my preference. In the beginning it takes some practice to turn your hair nicely around your fingers but the longer you do it the more skilled you become. You must of course take the time to dry them well. To keep the curls long I use Elnett satin heat protection styling spray, and of course hairspray to fix everything. Below is a nice tutorial by Cherrydollface that combines the way with the curling iron and the pincurls. The result is a beautiful vintage look.

Happy Pincurling

Dress to impress!

Whether we like it or not, we are judged by our appearances. So if you want to impress and step up the ladder of social status, you better dress like it. It's better to leave a chic, positive first impression.
Looking great involves many factors including mixing and matching. And make sure you know the difference between fashion and style. Fashion is what you buy, style is how you wear it! But how do we do that?

  1. you select a style that works for you, for me it's mostly the 40's style.
  2. Start shopping in the style you like and stick to it.
  3. Accessorize, very important, this will make or break your look.
  4. If you can, get some dresses made by a seamstress, fitting you perfectly
  5. Find out what coulours bring out the best in you.
  6. And last but not least, experiment, don't always follow the rules.
And now you can start shopping

Review of the Hayworth evening dress spring orient.

As a tribute to the Hollywood star, Rita Hayworth, we present this completely new evening / cocktail dress in the style of the 1940's in a new spring print - Spring Orient print on rayon crepe. The flowing line of this fabric gives this dress a super elegant appearance and oh so totally 40's.

Glamorous and nostalgic - this dress takes you back to the American Hollywood from the war time but with a little film noir thrown in it.

The dress has a classic sweetheart neckline from the forties with grow on sleeves to show that iconic 40's silhouette. Two darts under the bust to create a narrow waist. An extremely flattering neckline for all sizes. The elegant waterfall design sarong skirt is again an iconic American 40's style element and creates flattering ruching on the tummy.

The perfect evening dress from the 40's in an exclusive Art Deco floral print.

As far is the description of the dress. It is actually a beautiful dress but this nude tint does not flatter me. I had to take several photos before I had one that I was good enough. Furthermore, the model is very flattering. And the print is also beautiful. The sleeves are wide enough (when you get older sometimes that gives a problem) and he has a very nice cleavage. Minus: no stretch. But certainly a super cute dress that is worth the money. This dress gets 8.5 / 10. Negatives points because he has no stretch and for the difficult color.

Get it here.
